What is AEGEE?

Let us start from the beginning, what does the acronym AEGEE mean?
The original equivalence is in French: Association des États Généraux des Éstudiants de l'Europe. In English: Association of the States-General of European Students; also known as European Students' Forum.
Why in French?
Because AEGEE was founded in Paris in 1985 under the name of EGEE. Later on, the presence of the association spread to Madrid, Leiden, London, Milan and Munich.
Why that name?
The name refers, on the one hand, to the Aegean Sea, one of the places of birth of the modern democracy; and, on the other hand, to the first parliament stablished by the French Revolution: the States-General.
So a students association, alright. But what makes AEGEE different from the others?
  • AEGEE is one of the biggest multidisciplinary associations in Europe. AEGEE promotes a unified Europe, the cooperation among countries, communication, inclusion among students and it fights for the creation of an open and tolerant society.
  • The members of AEGEE are volunteers, it is a nonprofit association and it is not linked to any political party.
  • AEGEE is present in 271 university cities in 43 European countries and it has around 17,000 members.
  • AEGEE promoted the Erasmus programme since the beginning; thousands of European students have benefited from that great and enriching opportunity.
  • AEGEE is mainly formed by university students from all around Europe. In order to become a member, the only requirement is to be willing to travel, to get to know people and new countries and cultures, and, above all, to be open-minded. :
AEGEE is simply a students association formed by active young people involved in the creation of Europe and it is the ideal opportunity to travel, to get to know people from all the corners of Europe, to discover new cultures and AEGEE also gives you the opportunity to show your own culture to other people.
But maybe the best thing of AEGEE is that all this activities take place in a friendly environment on which there is always time for party.
